Just returned home from an incredible trip to Gracias a Dios and the Honduran Mosquito Coast. This was an exploratory trip fishing lagoons and heading up rivers in search of snook and tarpon… Below, Miskito people harvest rice in a small clearing in the jungle along a river. Gracias a Dios is a region our US State Department has classified as a Level 4: Do Not Travel

Costa Marlin Fly Project

Some recently released work from Costa’s Marlin Fly Project for which I was the photographer. This was an incredible project that dovetailed conservation and community with the added bonus of a largish group of like minded anglers getting together and sharing an incredible experience. This took place at Los Locos Mag Bay.

Faraway Cay, Honduras Permit

Here’s a short clip I shot while out at Faraway Cay in Honduras on a recent two week trip. In short, staying at and fishing from this remote key (island) is nothing short of amazing. Permit are the draw—and anglers have more shots at them than any other place I’ve been. The remoteness, location, and Honduran guides though make this an even more special place…

Calling All Outdoor Photographers

Have you ever wanted to have one on one camera instruction? From portraiture, landscape, travel, to macro, this class will cover a broad scope–both in the field and via lecture–of documentary style photography with fly fishing as the backdrop.

Jessica Haydahl and Nick Price are co-teaching a 2 ½ day, three night photography workshop on Idaho’s Silver Creek. Lodging and all meals are included. The max capacity of this class is 10 people.

Nick—

“Put yourself in positions where you can experience awe. Being yourself is being different! Find images you love and figure out how to get those shots.”

Jessica—

“Shoot through things, shoot around things, shoot under things. Shoot into light, break all the photography rules. Do whatever you need to do to differentiate your work from other people”

What’s Covered:

Beginning with how to conceptualize shots you want to get, Jessica and Nick will walk everyone through fundamentals (for example: iso, exposure compensation, depth of field, aperture, shutter speed, etc,) to using both lecture time and time in the field with models, hatches, and scenery to put together a broad base of journalistic storytelling behind the lens.

Location:

Located in south central Idaho, Silver Creek is a low gradient spring creek rich in insect life known as the graduate school of fly fishing. It’s in a high desert prairie setting with Sun Valley and a more alpine topography 45 minutes to the north. This is a perfect location to work on fly fishing photography along with landscapes and portraits of fishing guides to farmers, ranchers, and cowboys.

What’s Needed:

“A willingness to learn!”

Everyone who attends should have a digital camera that allows for manual control. Do not feel as though you need to own a ton of lenses. Jessica and Nick will discuss the pros and cons of a variety of different lenses along with their respective max apertures. Nick spent his first three years shooting with only a 35 mm ƒ2 lens. 

Ideally everyone will have a laptop enabling downloading imagery taken during the class, some light post production work (Adobe Lightroom), and photo critiques at the end of the 2 ½ day class.

San Antonio de Areco, Argentina

I just got back from a trip to San Antonio de Areco, Argentina. It was my first time there during their annual Tradición festival: an old gaucho festival and arguably the most important in Argentina. The images from this trip are for a personal photography project of mine on Areco and the people and traditions of.

Tailing Permit

Here’s a new shot from a recent trip to Puerto Rico. The number of tailing fish we saw was absurd yet they were, like most permit, still really challenging. Below is an image of a tailing permit I took on a stunning flat that’s about 2 miles long. I spent over 6 hours one day walking this flat with Pat Duke and I’d gladly put the day on repeat.
