The Sawtooths

Smoky skies are the new norm for August. Thunderstorms have been rolling through too, compounding the surreal color cast with a muggy and palpable sky. Sometimes it smells like sweet pipe smoke. The rest of the time it's not discernible to my nose. Burning sage and bitterbrush to the south and I suppose some cheatgrass as well. Lodgepole pines are getting cremated to the north. A visual amalgamation of sorts: muted, Impressionistic, cold-blue in August, and teary-eyed.

Below are a couple of new images taken on Christmas day near Hailey, Idaho. While difficult to notice in the images, it was snowing pretty hard. We received about 8" of new snow on Christmas Eve which was on top of our great base.

Silver Creek Alpine Glow

The image below was taken yesterday of Silver Creek just before the sun dipped below the horizon. The lower reaches have been frozen over from the recent cold which has been exacerbated by an inversion making it far colder in Picabo than in Ketchum or even the top of Baldy (Sun Valley Ski Area).

East Oxbow Silver Creek

Recent cold temps coupled with a wicked inversion have made it downright chilly on Silver Creek near Picabo, Idaho. Silver Creek, pictured below, was completely frozen over near Picabo.
